The Ambrosian Singers was founded by the late Peter Akpanya, an organist and devoted Catholic member of the parish. With a strong passion for sacred music, he initiated the formation of a new choir to become the third choir in the parish. He began by gathering a small group of committed individuals who supported his vision.
On 3rd December 1993, a formal request letter was written and signed by two key members—the President and Vice President—seeking permission from the Parish Advisory Board to establish the choir. Approval was granted, and the choir was officially formed with about seventeen (17) members under the leadership of the Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Monsignor Affrim, and his associate, Rev. Fr. E. K. Pani.
The primary aim of the choir was to animate the liturgy through Latin and English Mass settings, as well as hymns from the Dzifomor. The group was named the Ambrosian Singers in honour of Saint Ambrose, a renowned musician and devoted servant of the Church.
The choir made steady progress in its early years. However, on 12th April 1996, the sudden passing of its founder, Peter Akpanya, dealt a significant blow to both the choir and the parish community. Following his death, the choir experienced a period of decline.
Despite these challenges, the choir endured through prayer, dedication, and the sacrificial efforts of a few committed members. With continuous encouragement from the Parish Priest, the group gradually regained strength. The arrival of Sister Jessie, followed by Bro. James Gameli and Mr. Daniel Adevor, marked a turning point, helping to revive and stabilise the choir.
The Ambrosian Singers also benefited greatly from the support of their sister choirs, St. Mary and St. Cecilia, whose assistance and collaboration have been invaluable over the years.
Today, the choir stands as a testament to faith, perseverance, and commitment to liturgical music in the parish.
