26TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME – GOSPEL REFLECTION: INTERNAL CONFRONTATION
READINGS AT MASS TODAY
Ezekiel 18:25-28
Psalm 25
Phil. 2:1-11
Matt.21:28-32
Dear friends in Christ, N’wokafu YESU KRISTO…
There are many things we know we should do but do not want to do. Fortunately—and sometimes unfortunately—no one can force us to do what we know is good and required of us. The decision is entirely up to us. Everyone must confront his or her own conscience and decide what to do. And that is where our true nature is revealed.
The first son in today’s Gospel eventually confronted his own conscience and honestly faced the conflict within him. That deep and personal confrontation led him to change his mind and, ultimately, to do what was right. The Gospel tells us that he changed his mind and went. His decision to do what was required was personal and free from external coercion.
Beloved, at some point in life, every Christian—and indeed every human being—must confront himself and listen to the voice of God within his heart. We must be willing to examine our choices honestly and ask ourselves what is right, just and honorable to do, even when we do not feel like doing it.
True transformation begins when we stop expecting someone to force us to do the right things and take personal responsibility for our choices. Sometimes, the greatest step of faith is simply the moment when we change our minds, overcome our resistance, and finally do what we know is right.
PRAYER
Lord my God, Help me to overcome the resistance within me and freely choose what is good and pleasing to You. Amen!
May God bless you.
